RightNow congratulates new Conservative Party of Canada leader Erin O’Toole

OTTAWA, ON (August 24, 2020) – Political pro-life organization RightNow congratulates Erin O’Toole on becoming the new leader of the Conservative Party of Canada after a hard-fought battle with three other candidates looking to succeed Andrew Scheer in this position.

“We were happy to endorse Erin O’Toole as our third choice given his commitment to respect Conservative Party policy when it comes to free votes for members of caucus on issue of conscience”, said Alissa Golob, co-founder of RightNow, a non-profit organization committed to nominating and electing pro-life candidates.

RightNow sold almost 10,000 memberships throughout the leadership campaign, encouraging pro-life voters to rank their ballot with all four candidates. Rankings were based off three criteria: previous pro-life voting records, winnability, and policies and positions moving forward that were based on an interview with the candidate conducted by the organization.

“At the beginning of the campaign it was generally accepted in the media that Peter MacKay was going to be coronated, so it is impressive that Erin and his team were able to secure this victory. Given that a record number of members cast a ballot in the largest-ever leadership race in Canadian history, as well as how well our endorsed candidate Leslyn Lewis did, it is abundantly clear that social conservatives are not the 'stinking albatross' they were said to have been” said Golob.

O’Toole told RightNow that each member of caucus should absolutely have the freedom to vote according to their conscience on life issues, and that he would fight against expanding the current criteria for physician-assisted suicide.

“We believe that Erin O’Toole’s victory signals that the party is not willing to accept an aggressive pro-abortion agenda, as proposed by Peter MacKay. We believe that Erin will include social conservatives in the big, blue tent and respect the right of pro-life Canadians to run for nominations, win seats, and vote in the House of Commons and Senate according to their conscience in the Conservative Party of Canada" said Scott Hayward, co-founder of RightNow.
